“Dress for success” is a common saying used when someone wants to make an impression. Whether it’s applying for a job, presiding over a meeting in the office, or embarking on a new day at school, it’s important to feel confident yet professional. Does this motto, however, have a clear-cut definition and set rules people can abide by when looking through their wardrobe? Many public school systems across the country have been implementing school uniforms in order to provide students of all ages the answer to what’s considered “appropriate attire”. The controversial debate over the effects of school uniforms centers around whether uniforms take away the opportunity for children to express their individuality or if they make it easier for students to look past clothing to see the person underneath the uniform. The positive outcomes of school uniforms, including easy dress code interpretation and control, behavior resolves, and social acceptance, as well as negative impacts, such as loss of individuality, less self-expression, and high costs, all contribute to the overall mold of today’s students and their academic experience.
